Belval: a place full of history
Belval is the former industrial site of Arbed (Aciéries Réunies de Burbach-Eich-Dudelange), a Luxembourg steel group created in 1911 and which became ArcelorMittal following several mergers. With the shutdown of the last active blast furnace in Luxembourg in 1997, part of the site was freed up for new activities, while the other part remained a production site of the ArcelorMittal company.
Since then, this area in the south of Luxembourg City has undergone a spectacular transformation from an industrial zone to an attractive place to live and work. However, Belval has not forgotten its industrial past. The remnants of that era are today the symbol of its renewal: the link between the past and the present.
As you stroll through the area, you can see the blast furnaces (where ore was once transformed into cast iron before being turned into steel), which give the site an immeasurable charm, as well as the old Massenoire building. Renovated and integrated into the new urban district, these remnants make Belval an emblematic place of the region, which has managed to reinvent itself and offer new opportunities for the future.
